Privacy Policy
Last updated: 5 May 2026
AutoRank is a UK vehicle insight and comparison website based in Scotland. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We keep this deliberately plain-English: we use data to run the site, answer messages, improve the service, and protect it from abuse.
AutoRank is in beta. The vehicle information shown on the site is intended for general guidance and research only, not as a complete record about any person or vehicle.
- Cookie and browser-storage choices: your privacy preference, including whether you accept or reject optional analytics storage.
- Contact form details: your name, email address, subject, message, IP address, and basic anti-spam/rate-limit information when you contact us.
- Feedback: any feedback message you send, plus IP address and browser user-agent information used for security, debugging, and abuse prevention.
- Vehicle searches: registration marks or vehicle details you enter so the site can return vehicle, MOT, reliability, rarity, valuation, emissions, tax, ULEZ/LEZ, and safety estimates where available.
- Location and journey inputs: postcodes, place names, route details, fuel-search settings, and, only if you choose to use it, approximate latitude/longitude from your browser's location prompt.
- Technical information: server logs, request timestamps, error logs, browser/device information, and approximate network information needed to keep the site working.
- Analytics information: if optional Google Analytics is enabled and you consent, we may collect page-use information such as pages viewed, approximate location from network data, device/browser type, and interaction events.
- Local preferences: theme preference and similar display settings may be stored in your browser using localStorage. This is not used to identify you.
We do not currently run account registration, payment checkout, or behavioural advertising on AutoRank. If that changes, this policy should be updated before those features go live.
AutoRank uses vehicle and MOT-related datasets, derived calculations, and third-party/publicly available information to produce rankings, charts, estimates, and comparison tiles. This may include registration-level MOT records, make, model, fuel type, engine size, mileage, test results, defect descriptions, expiry dates, vehicle age, estimated running costs, marketplace-style listing data, Euro NCAP-style safety information, and tax/emissions estimates.
Vehicle registration data can sometimes relate to an individual when combined with other information. AutoRank does not show keeper names or addresses and does not try to identify private individuals. Search results should be treated as indicative and checked against official records, vehicle documents, professional inspections, and seller/dealer information before you rely on them.
- To provide search results, model pages, manufacturer pages, trend charts, and comparison features.
- To provide postcode, map, route, fuel-price, ULEZ, LEZ, clean-air-zone, and vehicle enquiry features that you ask to use.
- To respond to contact messages and handle feedback.
- To maintain security, prevent spam, investigate errors, and protect the site from abuse.
- To improve data quality, fix bugs, test new features, and understand whether site features are useful, including through optional analytics where you have agreed to it.
- To create aggregated statistics that do not directly identify you.
Where UK data protection law applies, we normally rely on legitimate interests to operate, secure, maintain, and improve AutoRank. When you send a contact or feedback message, we process the details you provide so we can respond and manage that request. We may also process information where needed to comply with legal obligations or defend legal claims.
We rely on your consent for optional analytics cookies or similar storage. Browser geolocation is only requested after you choose to use a location feature, and your browser will ask for permission separately. You can reject optional analytics and still use the core site.
We do not sell your personal information. We may share limited information with service providers that help us run AutoRank, such as hosting, database, email, security, logging, and backup providers.
Some features use or link to third-party services, including DVLA vehicle enquiry services, TfL ULEZ, Scotland LEZ, UK clean air zone services, the UK Fuel Finder service, postcode/geocoding providers such as postcodes.io and OpenStreetMap/Nominatim, route services such as OSRM, map tiles such as CARTO/OpenStreetMap, Google Maps links or favicons, social platforms, car marketplaces, and optional analytics providers such as Google Analytics if you accept analytics. Their own terms and privacy policies apply to their services.
Some third-party providers may process data outside the UK. Where we choose a service provider for our own processing, we aim to use appropriate safeguards and only share what is needed for the feature.
- Contact messages are kept only for as long as reasonably needed to deal with the enquiry and maintain records.
- Feedback may be kept while it is useful for product improvement and debugging.
- Security, server, and error logs are kept for a limited period unless needed to investigate abuse, faults, or legal issues.
- Rate-limit files used to prevent repeated submissions are temporary.
- Postcode geocoding results may be cached against a hashed lookup key for performance. Live browser coordinates are used for the requested search and are not intentionally kept as a user profile.
- Cookie preference records are kept in your browser until you clear storage or change your choice.
- Aggregated vehicle statistics may be kept indefinitely because they are used to operate the service and are not intended to identify site visitors.
- You can ask for a copy of personal information we hold about you.
- You can ask us to correct, delete, restrict, or stop using your personal information in certain circumstances.
- You can object to processing based on legitimate interests.
- You can withdraw optional analytics consent at any time by opening Cookie settings in the footer.
- You can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office if you are unhappy with how your information is handled.
To contact us about privacy, use the contact page or email [email protected].
AutoRank uses necessary browser storage to remember privacy choices, simple display preferences such as theme, and settings needed to make the site work. We do not use those necessary preferences to track you across other websites.
The Google tag may load in consent mode with analytics storage denied before you make a choice, so the
site can respect your preference. Optional analytics cookies or similar storage, including Google
Analytics cookies such as _ga and _ga_*, and analytics page-view tracking should
only start after you accept optional analytics. Google Analytics helps us understand page usage and
improve the service; we do not use it for behavioural advertising. You can accept, reject, or change
this choice from the cookie message or Cookie settings link in the footer.
Location access is separate from cookies. AutoRank only asks for browser geolocation when you choose a feature such as nearby fuel search, and you can use a postcode instead. External links, maps, social sites, and embedded third-party tools may set their own cookies or storage under their own policies.
We may update this policy as AutoRank develops, especially while the service is in beta. The date at the top of this page shows when this version was last updated.
