This is AutoRank's August 2026 UK Vehicle Market Report: a monthly look at registration-date records, fuel mix, EV share, MOT pass and fail rates, manufacturer movement, model rankings, common defects and the reliability patterns that show up once vehicles are being used every day.
Key UK Vehicle Stats for August 2026
August was another low-volume registration month in the AutoRank registration-date view, sitting just 1.49% below the current July snapshot but 5.64% above August 2025. Hybrid electric records stayed the largest fuel group, EVs held at just over a quarter, and petrol was the only major fuel type to rise month on month.
UK Vehicle Registration Trends in August 2026
AutoRank recorded 116,039 first registration-date records in August 2026. That is down 1,759 records, or 1.49%, against the current July 2026 snapshot. Compared with August 2025, the dataset is up 6,192 records, or 5.64%.
August was still a quiet pre-plate-change month, but it did not drop much further than July. Volkswagen kept the manufacturer lead, Jaecoo's 7 Luxury PHEV Auto topped the model-record table, and EV share stayed effectively flat at 26.15%.

UK EV, Hybrid, Petrol and Diesel Trends
EV monthly registration share was almost unchanged, moving from 26.21% in the current July snapshot to 26.15% in August. The August count was slightly lower for hybrid and electric records, petrol gained a little, and diesel fell back.

There were 30,344 electric registrations in August 2026. That made EVs the second-largest fuel type in the August dataset, behind hybrid electric records.

Top 10 Most Registered Vehicle Model Records in August 2026
Jaecoo led August's model-record table with plug-in hybrid strength at the top. MG and BYD also placed hybrid records in the top five, while Jaecoo's 5 Luxury EV remained the highest EV-only model record. The table also includes commercial-style records such as DAF Trucks Unknown, so it is best read as a vehicle dataset view rather than a pure passenger-car chart.

Volkswagen stayed in front in August, with Ford second and Mercedes-Benz third. The top ten was mixed rather than uniformly down: Vauxhall and MG gained against July, while Ford and BMW saw the largest top-ten drops.

Vauxhall posted the largest absolute gain among the top-ten manufacturers in this dataset, while Ford had the largest fall. As usual with registration-date records, one quiet month is a snapshot of volume rather than a complete brand verdict.
MOT Pass and Fail Rates in August 2026
AutoRank analysed 3,389,313 MOT tests completed in August 2026. Of those, 2,642,021 passed and 747,292 failed, giving an overall pass rate of 77.95%.

Tyres again dominate the common defect list. The pattern is familiar but still useful: a large share of MOT risk is visible, checkable and often preventable before test day.

Most common MOT advisories
The advisory list is led by the same tyre and oil-leak patterns. In plain English: check tyres before viewing a used car, and do not ignore oily undertrays or thin pads just because the car still passed.
What This Means for UK Drivers and Buyers
Popular vehicles are not automatically the most reliable vehicles. August's registration chart says what appeared in the registration-date records; the MOT chart says how vehicles are coping once they are out in the real world.
MOT data is useful because it shows weak points that owners actually meet: worn tyres, brake wear, lamps, parking brake issues, engine warning lights and suspension springs. A buyer who checks those patterns before purchase is already ahead of the usual quick look around the bodywork.
EV and hybrid growth is changing the market, but age and mileage still matter. Older petrol and diesel vehicles can show different failure patterns because they usually arrive at the test with more years and more miles behind them. Compare fuel type, age, mileage and common defects together before making a buying decision.
August 2026 Summary
August was another quiet registration-date month, but it was stable rather than sharply lower. AutoRank recorded 116,039 August registration records, 1.49% below July and 5.64% above August 2025. EVs took 26.15%, hybrid electric records remained the largest fuel group, Volkswagen led the manufacturer table, and Jaecoo topped the model-record chart.
The MOT side of the report is the practical bit for drivers and buyers. The August pass rate landed at 77.95%, hybrid electric records led the main fuel types for MOT pass rate, and the most common defects were still everyday wear items: tyres, oil leaks and brake components that can often be checked before test day.
